The New Zealand China Friendship Society and its branches have run tours to China for many years. These involve general tours - designed to introduce Society members and other interested New Zealanders to the People's Republic of China - and special interest tours. The Society's national tours committee, based in Tauranga since 1989, normally organises one general tour each year. As a general rule tours on the Silk Road are run in even-numbered years, with alternative routes used in odd-numbered years. Routes used in recent times, apart from the Silk Road tour, have included:
Individual branches of the Society intermittently organise tours to their own sister cities, and surrounding districts. Society national tours are especially suited to people making first-time visits to China, or to parts of the country they have not previously visited. They are led by NZCFS members familiar with that country, and itineraries are agreed in advance with the Chinese People's Association For Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), so the programme is known before departure. Most include visits to Beijing so members have the opportunity to enjoy the world famous attractions of China's modern capital. Prices are ALL INCLUSIVE (transportation, meals, accommodation, sightseeing costs, airport taxes etc) so there are no hidden extras. Good quality Chinese international tourist class hotels are used throughout and transport is in comfortable and reliable vehicles. As well as a New Zealand leader, Society tours are accompanied by an English speaking national guide supplied by CPAFFC, with powers that allow them to iron out problems which can often beset independent travellers. And English speaking local guides with good local knowledge are provided at each place visited. NZCFS tours are generally restricted to a maximum of 20-24 people for both travelling convenience and friendship which develops in smaller groups.
