TEACHING - COLLEGE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES, GUANGZHOU The establishment of College of International Studies (COIS), situated in the suburbs of Guangzhou City, is a new intention of Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University to serve the situation of China as a new member of WTO. As its name suggests COIS is of international nature in its design of programs to train students with open mind and modern knowledge and skills. Of the six three-year programs COIS offers at present, the English major stands as the biggest, including half of the 1500 freshmen this year. Other programs like accounting, business management, tourist management, computer science & technology, electronic business, etc. also focus on English proficiency of students. So COIS invites English native speakers to teach oral and written English, 20 classes or so per week. The regular pay for a foreign teacher is about 5,000 to 7,000 RMB Yuan or even more per month according to his/her academic degree, teaching experience and qualifications. This is a bit more than the average salary of a Chinese professor and nearly double the payment by the government to foreign teachers in most of Chinese universities. In addition, a foreign teacher who works at COIS for an academic year will enjoy a one-way international travel fee. COIS provides apartments for foreign teachers at no charge including water and electricity. Medical care is also free of charge at the school clinic. Foreign teachers don't have to prepare textbooks. The autumn semester begins in September while the spring term in March. Those with teaching experience are particularly welcome. Applicants can contact Prof. Feng directly for further information. His e-mail address is: fuchiko53@yahoo.com or qgfeng@pub.guangzhou.gd.cn.

FUJIAN
WOMEN'S COLLEGE http://www.chinawomenscollege.org/ Dear Friends, I am particularly interested as my ancestor women folk had a hand in this, and even my great-grandfather helped get it started. I paid them a visit and had a marvelous time. They gave me some historical material to go through. I am now reading a young Princeton woman's thesis about the whole story. There is also an older book about it, which I am trying to get a copy of. One of my family contributed one chapter to this book. But more practically speaking, most of their 10 overseas teachers are recruited by Christian organizations and mostly American, although they aren't allowed to proselytize. They really need some more teachers for next year starting in late August, and I see the real need for a balancing New Zealand contribution. Perhaps you know someone or know some strong women within New Zealand China Friendship who would take an interest and look for someone to come. The conditions are the most excellent I have heard of for foreign teachers and their location is divine on a hill overlooking the Minjiang next to a wonderful park. They all live in one big house, with separate flats, phones, jointly share two computers with email, and their own dining room and cook. Wow, I wish I had that! Fuzhou is allot nicer than Guangzhou or Taiwan to my mind and I have lived in both. Beautiful mountains all around and seacoast nearby, so New Zealanders should feel at home. Interested people can go to the website for more information and also email me to answer questions about Fuzhou. I tried the email for the college, but no answer. I just took a bus over and visited, but you can't do that. Thanks, Derek
