Last months meeting was a very different hands on experience . Our thanks go to June Li,who taught art in China, and patiently took us through the intricacies of elementary calligraphy. The Chinese characters for one, two, three, appear very simple. One stroke, two strokes, three strokes. Bamboo; and drawing a Panda well I can't speak for others but I really floundered. Those who participated have a new appreciation of the calligrapher's skill. We thank June for the trouble she went to in providing all the necessary brushes, ink and paper. We hope to have a follow up before too long.

Early this month President Ian and I travelled to the Consulate in Auckland to a farewell to the Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand, His Excellency Zhang Yuanyuan, hosted by the Acting Consul General Mr Huang. Hia Excellency is returning to Beijing fcr a new posting. In the course of conversation Mr Zhang told Ian and I of his personal Long March. When he was sixteen he and others his age walked from Beijing to Shou Shan, Mao's birth place, a journey of over a thousand kilometers. It was in winter too. What an achievement to look back on !

GENERAL MEETING
Thursday June 26th 2008 7.30 pm
Venue, Waikato Migrant Centre Boundary Road Fairfield
Speaker Dr Michael Li
Topic Chinese Caligraphy
A hands on experience. It is a real delight to introduce our members to Michael Li He is our tutor for our Conversation Mandarin classes held every Monday at the Migrant Centre. He is an exceptional teacher, and those of us who attend these classes, along with those who attend his evening classes. at Fairfield College, are encouraged and swept along by his teaching skill and enthusiasm.

Calligraphy means "good writing." Chinese calligraphy is an art form, and calligraphers are highly respected. In this session Michael is to teach the calligraphy of Chinese numbers, one to ten. As stated it is a hands on session so come along and have a go.

I realize that members who receive their newsletter on line, will already have this notice about the fund raising dinner. However it is important for all members to be aware of what your committee is doing with regard to fund raising to assist in the immediate relief of suffering as the result of the earthquake. As you will see from the flyer we are combining our effort here with the Waikato Chinese Association. As you will be aware, following the disastrous earthquakes in Sichuan, many organizations throughout the country are involved in fundraising ventures. Here in Hamilton Associations with interests and links to China are in the process of arranging concerts, dinners, and other functions to help raise funds, The Project Committee of the National Executive of the NZCFS is currently examining proposals regarding fundraising directly related to the long period of reconstruction of homes, schools and general infrastructure in recently devastated areas.
